Red plant (?) growing in pool on exposed granite outcrops.
I'm aware this orchid is out of its known range. I've only seen it in one place, on a live oak branch on the north end of the island.
It began blooming on June 18.
Third watersnake today, the second one I saw I didn't manage to get good photos
My first water snake, very happy about seeing one
Castanea pumila. Fagaceae. Often mistaken for American Chestnut (Castanea dentata) but the leaves are wider, twigs are hairy (versus no hair on American), and only 1 round (versus 2-3 pyramidal) nuts are inside the Spinney bur fruit. Chinese Chestnut is also very similar but leaves are leathery with white scruffy hairs on the underside. Chinese Chestnut is resistant to chestnut blight and is being crossed with American Chestnut to develop a resistant strain of American Chestnut.
