He jumped crazy high right after taking this picture! It was on a very hot day. When we came back he came to the exact same place... maybe he was trying to hide from someone? Since other than the trail there wasn’t anywhere else he could camouflage so well.
I'm VERY puzzled by this grasshopper. It was just sitting there on a pine cone. I stealthily crept up and grabbed it, but it literally did nothing. It just stood there like a zombie, clinging on to the pine cone very tightly. Even poking it wouldn't make it budge. Eventually I got it off the pine cone and brought it home. At home, I put it in some water (to see if horsehair worms would emerge- they didn't), and it did swim and climbed up the container like a normal grasshopper would. It hardly moves at all unless I put it in water though. I put some spinach in its container to see if it would eat, but all it did was climb on top of it and then it's been standing there on the side of the container doing mostly nothing for hours.
I thought it may be infected with Entomophaga grylli, but if so, the fungus seems to be taking an awfully long time to show up. I'll just keep an eye on it and see what happens.
Behavior: Resting then began moving as students approached.
