Silvery glade?rnjf
found in garage, completely stuck to packing tape. Was able to remove it (using oil and cutting away tape to prevent resticking), without injury, and release it. Second shot shows small rectangle of tape still stuck to midsection, but I was able to work that off by holding down each side of it while the snake continued to move, leaving it - and no scales! - behind.
saw two today, this one several hundred feet behind our house, in a wetland area
Desmognathus fuscus
Family: Caudata
Identity: Adults range from 3-5 1/2 inches in length. White lines corral in black start at the eye and slope downward towards their jaw. The legs on this type of salamander are also two different sizes and shapes because of the difference in strength between the front and hind legs.
Habitat and Range: Dusky salamanders are most commonly found in calm pools of rapid streams as well as in seepages in forest areas. This species doesn't seem to travel very far from their seepages and streams and are not often found in Vermont's North East Kingdom.
