Eastern Lubber Grasshopper (Romalea microptera)

Observer

anita363

Date

April 9, 2008 10:57 AM EDT

Description

I thought this was just priceless. This grasshopper is so voracious, he's trying to chow down on a picture of a pizza!

I was looking for a size scale (my ruler wasn't handy for some reason, so I was using my hand), and someone else on the trail mentioned that they often used a credit card for the purpose. That sounded good to me; I reached into my pocket & pulled out my motel room keycard, placing it down carefully so as not to spook the bug. And what does he do? He tries to eat it! I'm not putting you on -- you can see his mandibles around the edge of the card!

By the way, this is still an immature. The adult is even bigger.
