Early Spring: February 2015

Last week (2/21/15) heard first of the year purple finch and dark-eyed juncos singing as well as a northern flicker. Buckeyes have already broken bud. This week (2/28/15) heard song sparrow, white-crowned sparrows and house finches singing -- first of the year. Grasses that germinated with the fall/winter rains are already starting to turn brown at the tips. With the unseasonably warm weather and lack of rains, looks like spring has come early. Unless substantial rain falls in the next 2 months, we are headed for another of severe drought.
