Welcome back birds!

Observations have resumed at Camp Kubena, I arrived on Saturday the first of February and excitedly navigated the grounds to stretch my legs from the 6 hour drive.

Most of the trees outside of the oaks are without leaves, but the grass seems to be overwhelmingly full of clovers, and the early sproutings of wildflowers.

02/02/20- Today I was so excited to capture photographs both an eastern bluebird and a crested cara cara, I had seen the blue birds from afar but never got close enough to get a photo. This little guy was getting mad at his reflection in a shiny work truck. He soon flew back to his mate, around some swallow gourds I hope they will use them as we only have a few active boxes.

The Cara Cara was exciting because they are such a striking bird. Looking almost like a secretary bird, and having that power that comes with being a bird of prey. We had only previously sighted one before in Kubena Field. While this one was found down the road it was nice to get confirmation of an almost mythical animal.

All in all the birds are the most prominent thing, at camp right now, the cooler weather seems to have made other animals hide or go more dormant, as I don't see as many reptiles, insects or mammals.

The fields are filled with sparrows and robins, I saw a harrier, a chickadee and finally got a picture of our local blue Heron. I'm excited for the work week ahead and hopefully learning some of their calls
