Photos / SoundsWhatBald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)Observerchatterton-blueDescriptionGreat egrets and great blue herons were alarmed away when the eagle arrived: egrets pictured retreating. The herons made more noise and possible territorial circling, and returned to hunt while the eagle was still there. The eagle sat (pictured) near the surface of the water (its tail probably wet) for over twenty minutes before going to the conifer perch also pictured. |

WhatRed-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)ObserverbirdwhispererDescriptionWhen viewed through binoculars we could tell this nest was made on an artificial post with chicken wire tied together to make a cone shape which the nest is built on. Could be Great Horns or ravens nesting this season but the nest was undoubtingly created by Ferruginous. |

There are actually other birds of prey too, like Messelastridae, but they are extinct. Birds of prey are a paraphyletic group, consisting of telluravians with ancestral traits. Since 2019, Cariamiformes has been considered birds of prey by some sources, but I don't agree because they were not traditionally considered birds of prey and birds of prey are paraphyletic anyway, it's not like including Cariamiformes would make them monophyletic.
