Brown branch on the ground due to cicada flagging

  • Picture 1 shows 3 slits in the branch that have been made by the female to deposit the eggs. The 4th slit, on the right, damaged the branch and caused it to break and to fall.
  • Picture 2 shows a cross section

Description

What causes the branch ends to have brown leaves .?
Many branches have the same symptoms.
Over the weekend I've observed many occurrences of this phenomenon, mostly on pin oaks.

  • The branches show no insect damage at the base of the affected area.
  • The brown leaves are fully grown leaves.

Shingle Oak (Quercus imbricaria)

Description

This is a shingle oak showing some unusual damage to its foliage. This is called flagging, and it's due to our recent (Brood X) Magicicada emergence. The female cicadas so vigorously punched these twigs when laying eggs that they caused them to die. It looks bad, but these will fall off and then the tree will have about 17 years to recover. Apparently, this doesn't do too much harm to mature trees, but little saplings can be seriously damaged.
