Description

For the woodland fungus Drumstick Truffleclub (Tolypocladium capitatum) growing out of this subterranean 'deer truffle' ('False Truffle'), cf. inaturalist.org/observations/196883640, a surefire way to find it, when it has already been found by that parasitic ascomycete fungus: then excavate the long yellow (sterile) stem topped by a shiny brown (fertile) egg-shaped blob to find anchored down underneath any leaf litter & moss a hard lump, the underground (hypogeous) fungus, sometimes with several Drumstick Truffleclub fungi emerging from it, the mycelium connected to rootlets of a nearby conifer ...Elaphomyces is one of the most important ectomycorrhizal fungal genera in temperate/subarctic forest ecosystems, for soil nutrient cycling; if Elaphomyces granulatus does not grow in North America, this one just might turn out to be E. americanum
