Description

Historic tree called Samuel, planted 1782.

Taking a historical perspective, like for all trees with an age older than 100, I would make and exception and consider this exceptional individual tree as 'wild', as it had to adapt through centuries.

Description

Update 5/28/21: LoriAnne Barnett with the AZ Dept. of Forestry and Fire Management came out to measure this graythorn and found that its size beats the previous state/U.S. champion that had been nominated in 2012! Ours was measured at 24 ft tall, a circumference at the root collar of 42.5 in., and average crown spread of 24 ft. The champion tree points system formula adds together the height (ft), circumference (in.), and a quarter of the average crown spread (in.). Ours was 72.5 points (24 + 42.5 + 6). The previous state/national champion graythorn was 50 points: https://dffm.az.gov/sites/default/files/media/National%20Champion%20Tree%20Registry%202018.pdf
