Photos / SoundsWhatGenus AphelinusObserverkneubaueDescription~1 mm body with gold translucent metatsoma found ovipositing into live aphids on an Acerola; Malpighia emarginata tree leaf. Before ovipositing wing tips folded up onto the back and locked into place out of the way when the ovipositor was exerted. (see 2nd image) AI was "pretty sure" of the subfamily Entedoninae, however the prey were aphids. Had two longitudinal sutures on the mesosoma and 4 tarsi. There were 2 females ovipositing into the aphids, on the same leaf as a Cynipoidea wasp also ovipositing. Bob Zuparko on Facebook, Hymenopterists Forum explained "the gestalt sure looks like Aphelinus." This video of Aphelinus abdominalis confirms behavior observed and photographed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWxjB2nKi2U |

Photos / SoundsWhatSubfamily CharipinaeObserverkneubaueDescription~1.5 body with wings ~.5 mm longer than shiny black body. Observed this wasp ride several large sized living and moving Aphis aphids while ovipositing into their back side on an Acerola; Malpighia emarginata tree leaf. This Cynipoid wasp was possibly following after the Chalcid; Aphelinus wasps (visible in 2nd image although blurry) who were also ovipositing into the aphids causing them paralysis and stumbling. Charipinae wasps are hyperparasitoids of Aphelininae. |
