Description

This is one of two of these nests in a Coast Live Oak. To me it looks like a Woodrat nest. This one is about 20 feet off the ground, made up of branches and leaves.

Description

This is one of two of these nests in a Coast Live Oak. To me it looks like a Woodrat nest. This one is about 6-7 feet off the ground, made up of branches and leaves, perhaps some soil.

Description

This Live Oak Apple Gall was in a Coast Live Oak tree. It's on the medium to smaller side. The gall has protruding ridges along it. I didn't see any holes. It's stem-based.

Are these Lacewing pupae? They were inside a Live Oak Apple Gall that I dissected (itself on a Coast Live Oak). I can't tell whether I screwed them up or if they were already dead, or still alive?

Description

This Live Oak Apple Gall was in a Coast Live Oak tree. I picked it and dissected it. It was about 6-9 feet high. It is stem-based. I didn't see any wasps inside.
Photos 4-7 shows a bisected exit hole.

I took a page out of @juan_sphex's book and took a bite of the gall. Did not taste good, do not recommend, though it did open the gall, leading to my discoveries of the critters within.

There are many Two-horned Galls in this Coast Live Oak and around the park. These are on the underside of a Coast Live Oak leaf, along the leaf's vein. There are scars underneath. It has no holes and looks fresh.
