Photos / SoundsWhatOwls (Order Strigiformes)Observerkyle_eaton_photographyDescriptionThis observation is for the owl species that left this owl pellet. Found in the dirt beneath a grove of Coast Live Oaks. It contained rodent bones and grey fur. This area is home to Barn Owls and Great Horned Owls. It was compact. |

Photos / SoundsWhatOwls (Order Strigiformes)Observerkyle_eaton_photographyDescription(For the owl). An 8.5cm long owl pellet found among the sparse leaf litter under some Coast Live Oaks in a clearing next to a public restroom. This pellet contained a North American Jerusalem Cricket, gray fur, and bones of a California Vole.
Resident owls include Barn Owls and sometimes a Great Horned Owl. A Western Screech used to be found here, but hasn't been seen in a few years.

WhatGreat Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus)ObserverkmelvilleDescriptionFound under one of the owl's usual roots. Had been regurgitated within the past 24 hours with a few hollow shafts/calami (I believe them to be from a ring-necked pheasant as I found a large scattering of pheasant feathers under the roost 2 days prior) |

@james5: You might want to change this to a taxon field too. But note the system doesn't automatically do a lookup on the old text value and translate to a taxon value (stored as its taxon number). So on each observation that uses it you will manually have to edit the field and get it to do the taxon lookup and save.
In this case it is trival as there is only one observation with an actual value:
http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/1628196.
Mind you an advantage of having a text field, is that people can add multiple species on one line - difficult to search for later though!
I note that iNaturalist doesn't really handle multiple copies of the same type of field well (you can't ask it to lookup all the species in the "preyed on" field and the "other prey species field" at the same time).
