Date

Description

Found wandering on my dirt driveway on 4/6/2023. It accepted dandelion leaves. Orange spiracles.
Molted: 4/13/23
Purged: 4/21/23 so I gave it some dead beech leaves for cocoon purposes, which it confusingly began to consume.
Cocoon: 4/24/23 using some of its hair
Pupated: 4/27/23
Emerged: 5/16/23
Tawny virbia, maybe? Unfortunately I could not get any hindwing photos.

Description

On Black Cherry (Prunus serotina). The Black Cherry Gall Azure Caterpillar mimics the Black Cherry Leaf Gall (Eriophyes cerasicrumena). The galls are home to small mites that feeds on the black cherry leaf. It turns out this caterpillar has a fondness for the galls - it eats the galls, mite and all. It’s one of only two caterpillars in our area known to be carnivorous. (The other is the caterpillar of the harvester butterfly.)

Found 9/18/2022 on aster (wood aster?).
It seemed to prefer eating the flowers and would ignore the leaves, which made keeping up with its appetite a bit difficult.
Wandered: 9/28/2022
It made a cocoon between paper towels so I am not sure exactly when it pupated. I am hoping that it emerges this season.

Found on 5/23/23 in a leaf shelter on blueberry (shelter is in 5th photo)
Wandered: 5/29/23
Pupated: 6/2/23
Emerged: 6/23/23 and is 6mm
The closest in appearance that I can find is Carpatolechia fugitivella, but that eats elm and the larval images are not a good match. Or maybe Chionodes mediofuscella? Long labial palps. A very active moth that runs in circles all over the container.

Neotelphusa praefixa seems close too, and it is listed on blueberry on the HOSTS database. That might be my best guess.
