Description

A large, robust grass growing in normally flooded culvert ditch in bottomland forest. I thought it was Urochloa maxima but that appears to be hairy, and this entire plant is glabrous.
Culm is geniculate, rooting from several nodes. Culm >5mm at base, slightly flattened. Leaf 3 cm wide, 30 cm long. Ligule is a membrane, 0.5mm. Stem, leaves, sheaths all glabrous. Huge auricles. Panicle of spike-like sub-panicles on a trigonous branch, spikelet 7mm, consisting of both glumes and 2 florets, Panicum style: 1st glume keeled, 5mm, long-pointed, has 5 nerves; 2nd glume keeled, 6.5mm, long-pointed; Sterile lemma 5mm; fertile lemma Panicum type, shiny hard pale tan surface, lens-like, 2mm long. 2 stamens; I don't see any tuft of hairs on tip of lemma. Spikelets falling entire and separate.
