Description

Apologies -- this is not an organism, even though it has the word "dog" in its common name. It is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that I personally have only seen once before.

(Ignore the green dot, which is an lens artifact.)

The big bright thing in the sky shows the rough position of the sun, seen through a strong haze. The second, less-bright thing on the right, which has a colored fringe on one side, is a "sun dog" or parhelion, which is caused by refraction off of cirrus clouds.

Very often there would be a sun dog on each side of the sun, but here there was only one -- I think because there was not as much cirrus on the other side.

A sun dog is always at 22º off to one side compared to the position of the sun.

Not visible in this shot, but seen twice on this purple coneflower plant, and seen quite clearly.

These spiders hide when they see you approaching to photograph them; they respond as if you are a predator.

Description

The gardeners have tried hard to eliminate all of the invasive Italian arum, but there is quite a lot that escaped being found.

At this time of year the new leaves are growing rapidly and the plants will become more and more visible as the other foliage around them gradually dies down.
