Love of birds and bugs as a kid in NC Pennsylvania led to graduate school at UNC where Nelson Hairston was my mentor. I studied a hybrid zone in the Plethodon jordani complex and assisted NH in his experiments on mountain Desmognathus salamanders. My own work was with the saprophagous insect community that visits small carrion. I have fond memories of rearing phorid flies, and would love to have a good key where I could get back into identifying these species, now that I'm getting hump-backed, just like them.
