Interested in Fynbos, Afromontane forests and riverine vegetation on the Cape Peninsula particularly in the Hout Bay mountains, kloofs and valleys and am therefore obviously concerned about invasive vegetation displacing local plant communities both in the mountains and river corridors.

So, I am trying (slowly) to get a handle on both locally indigenous, alien and invasive alien plants. This is particularly challenging in the valley / lower kloofs riverine environment where there are so many weeds which are difficult to identify as are the indigenous species. I am member of the Friends of the Rivers of Hout Bay and we need to be able to distinguish what to remove, what to keep and what to plant!

I am also a member of the Mountain club and hiking in and exploring the Peninsula mountains is a priority but I try to remove some invasives each hike and have a particular interest in removing hard to reach 'outlier' plants mainly pines, hakea and stinkbeans because, if done properly, these don't need herbicide. A small group of us have started weeding / hacking pines on the southern slopes of Skoorsteenberg above Tiersbos.
