I am a National Geographic Explorer, a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation, principal at Ocean Integrity Research, Adjunct Professor in the School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria, Senior Science Advisor to the Local Environmental Observer (LEO) Network, Leader of LEO Oceans, Co-Investigator of the OceanCanada Partnership. I am coordinating the implementation of the LEO Network in British Columbia, including the development and promotion of a classroom teaching unit entitled, Student-Elder Partnership for Understanding Ecological Change. I am also leading an integrated modeling project of the marine areas adjacent to the South Atlantic states with the Southeast Landscape Conservation Collaborative and the Southeast Fishery Management Council. I was recently lead principal investigator of a National Center of Ecological Analysis and Synthesis working group that used coastal marine ecosystem modeling and other approaches to investigate the health and futures of the social-ecological systems of the coastal Gulf of Alaska in the context of pressures such as oil spills, climate change, fisheries, land use changes, and extrinsic change. I have published over 80 scientific publications (of various types) and has convened many collaborative workshops, symposia and some international conferences. I received a PhD in zoology from the University of British Columbia, an MSc in marine science from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (California State Universities), and a BSc in Biology and Environmental Studies. I'm very interested in interfacing the LEO Network with iNaturalist.
