Nestling in the steep sided valley of the upper River Douglas in Lancashire, Wingate Wood is a small remnant of England's ancient woodland. The first known records of the wood date back to 1343, it was recorded as being an Ash coppice in 1652 when it provided wood fuel and charcoal for Brock Mill forge. The wood is surrounded by hay meadows, hedgerows, secondary woodland, floodplain meadows, several small ponds and a fast flowing spate river.
