Description

Red tide - Tsitsikamma

This red tide lasted for days. More brown than red. Note the difference in colour of the water between the clear rock pool and the sea. A rough sea then produced lots of foam which dried to a dark grey mush. At night the phosphorescence was spectacular.
A local newspaper quoted a scientist as saying that this was Lingolodinium polyedrum, seen here for the first time two years ago on the Eastern Cape coast and thought to be an alien species brought to our shores by a freighter. Are these red tides tested when they occur?
No dead fish or other sea creatures were washed up as far as we could see.
