S. smithii has characteristic apiculate apices with pseudosepta. Valves are larger with less dense striae compared to the otherwise similar S. separanda. These valves vary in the structure of their apices, but specimens with varying structures are represented in different sources (Foged, 1981; Bahls, 2012).
