It was nearly dark, and this setting was really beyond the capabilities of my cell phone camera. However, notice rounded contour of its head (no "ears"). It was larger than a barn owl and smaller than a great horned owl. It was feeding on the ground, then flew up to a tree and then the fence post when it saw me. Beyond the pasture fence was a heavily-wooded stream bottom (typical habitat for barred owls).
