This damage is assumed to be due to harvesting the bark for traditional purposes; the recorded uses are many and varied including edible pulp, fish poison, medicines and tannin for leather treatment - all from the same bark.

A previous tree in the same area and maimed in a similar fashion was observed to slowly die over a 2 year period after it had been about 80% ring barked
