Locally common on shaded limestone outcrops and associated rendzina. Growing with Cardamine forsteri and Hydrocotyle heteromeria within a remnant matipo (Myrsine chathamica) / karamu (Coprosma chathamica) with hakapiri (Olearia traversiorum) and kowhai (Sophora chathamica) forest.
