I stopped a group of men and children just outside the Luccette Boutique Guest House in Phuthadijhaba. They were holding a live blackshouldered kite (pictured here). I asked them where they had found the bird. One man proudly told me that he had watched the bird swoop to catch a mouse “in a forest nearby” and had then ran towards the bird (still on the ground) and had beaten it with a stick. The bird was still alive when they were parading it in the street.
