iNaturalist is a citizen science project and online social network of naturalists, citizen scientists, and biologists built on the concept of mapping and sharing observations of biodiversity across the globe. Observations may be added via the website or from a mobile application. This course will provide an overview of iNaturalist, and how it can be used for existing projects and new projects, in this case, designed by the participants in this class. It will combine an introductory presentation about iNaturalist, as well as a hands-on session where participants document plants and animals at Birmingham Botanical Gardens using the iNaturalist app on their own smart devices. In addition to learning about the nuts and bolts of the iNaturalist platform, participants will also receive instruction on best practices that will facilitate identifications of unknown plants and animals, and improve the quality and utility of their iNaturalist observations. No previous experience necessary.
