Dec 20, 2020 - North Side

Conducted survey of North side 930am-130pm (took a detour to see the newt memorial art on the south side). Weather was 48-59F, sunny. Rain MTD 1.85 in, YTD 2.78 in per http://www.weathercat.net/wxraindetail.php

Documented 56 dead newts, 2 of which were juveniles. No live newts observed.

Of note:
I saw a dead newt on the side of the road that I first thought was alive because it was still 3D. Looked like it got hit by a car, was able to move off the road, but then died shortly after :(. Another reminder that we are likely not seeing all of the newts being killed by traffic. Not only is it likely some are decaying quickly or getting kicked up/moved by cars, but some hits are not immediately fatal.... Super sad. (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/66861859)

1 dead newt was observed in HTH Array 4 study site (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/66862849). Did not remove it.

Other documented roadkill:
2 centipedes
1 frog
1 Jerusalem cricket

Documented human activity:
105 moving vehicles
66 parked vehicles
2 motorcycles
49 pedestrians
53 bicycles (including a unicycle)

@tyap, I added your observation about injured newts to the list of reasons we might be undercounting the roadkill. Thanks for bringing that up!
