IDENTIFICATION TIME!

Well done everyone.

The situation will certainly change, but at present Cape Town is

I trust that everyone enjoyed the weekend and the holidays ...

But now it is time for identifications!

But first, please upload any of your outstanding observations. These must be done my 8th May, but if you can do them soonest, then they can be identified, and you will be free to help us with identifications.

please review the Identification Curation tool here: https://vimeo.com/246153496
this two minute tut will save you lots of time!

GENERAL IDENTIFICATIONS:
We need this backlog cleared please.

Basically if you can put this to species, genus or family, then please do so. If not please leave it for those who can - dont make IDs like "Plants" - to be useful it needs to be at family level: so proteas, ericas, grasses, daisies, peas, vygies - at that level. But for animals, these are fine if you dont know the species: birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects, spiders, scorpions, snails, etc. For Fungi, please separate Fungi from Lichens - that is good enough to reach the specialists.
So: please clear these. Everyone can help!! click this link:

SPECIALISTS:
Specialists - Please note that we will be focussing on southern Africa rather than cities. So please help across the board.
Please revisit from time to time as unknowns get sorted. At this stage we are focussing on getting idetifications. Reviews and checking and further instructions will follow later in the week.

Marine:

Land:
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?project_id=city-nature-challenge-southern-africa-2023
Please add your taxon (e.g. Birds, Proteas, Scroffs) into the Species box to narrow down to your speciality.

More links will follow later as the ID bins for groups get sorted out.

Current status - for Cape Town:

4,000 observations Casual (10%) [planted or captive]
7,235 observations Research Grade (18%) - we want this at 80% by Saturday.
29,673 observations Need ID (73%) - we are focussing on these.

Updates to follow as we reach different milestones.

Looking at la Paz having almost three times the number of observations as we do - I noticed a trend: there was an observation of a hand holding a bat. that same hand holding the same bat at almost (but not quite) the same angle appeared in at least 8 other observations! We would have put all those photos into one observation. So if we were to put each photo in a separate obs then we would also have MANY more obs. One of the obseravtions was https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/159208187 by jesusmartinez4. The same observer also had several observations of the same tree!

Careful: we also have a few people doing the same thing. So dont call dark pots when we are in the fire. There are some dark sheep in any flock.
