Pherrins Bog

Pherrins Bog was described by Hub Vogelmann in part 2 of Natural areas of Vermont [1969]. It is said to be a small (2 acre) bog on privately-owned land in the town of Morgan in Orleans County, about 4 miles north of Island Pond between VT 114 and the Pherrins River.

I visited this area on July 23, 2023, but I can't say I found Pherrins Bog. The Pherrins River crosses the highway at least three times in a 2-mile stretch so it's hard to know what side of the highway Vogelmann was referring to. In any case, I marked some points of interest on a map for reference. If anyone knows or finds out more, please add a comment.

I'm going up but probably not until fall. I hope things dry out a bit and I'll go looking for it when I'm camping up in that area. THANKS for this!!

i think you managed to walk completely around it without getting in it. Check the air photos :)

Thanks @charlie I really have no expertise when it comes to aerial photos. If you can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

I just wasn't sure if it was a good idea to post the location of a bog on here? I'll PM you. It isn't really a secret but... people get weird about that stuff.

Thanks @charlie! You are right to be cautious.

The bad news is that Pherrins Bog is on private property with no public access. The good news is that The Nature Conservancy holds an easement on a parcel that includes Pherrins Bog, and so in that sense, it is protected.

As it turns out, almost all of the observations I made on that day were on private land. There weren't any signs that suggested it was private property, nor were there any signs that suggested public access. If anyone chooses to go there, you do so at your own risk.

I'm content with the fact that TNC is protecting Pherrins Bog even though there is no public access. Most of the places mentioned by Vogelmann are now protected. Pherrins Bog is one of those places.
