A message to iNaturalist community members:

Please note that student observations in this project are reviewed by TRAINED DIATOM EXPERTS AND INSTRUCTORS OF THE COURSE. If you do not have expert knowledge of diatoms, please refrain from demoting the observation to broader classification groups. Please do not undo the hard work of students making species level identifications. Thank you for your cooperation!

Let me know if your missing diatom species are languishing...

I have tried to get every species added so far, but please send me a message if you have a species observation that is more than a couple days old that needs to be added to the iNat database.

Keep up the good work!

Adding new diatom species to iNaturalist

As you may have noticed, many species of diatoms have not been added into iNaturalist. This is a work in progress. If you put the species name you are trying to ID in as a placeholder, I will add it to the iNat database (assuming it is a valid species name). This does not necessarily mean I agree with the identification! Please send me a note if you find a species that is present in iNat with an outdated name and I will do a taxon swap to update the name in the database. Have fun!

Adam
