Two new species of peacock spiders discovered in Western Australia

The first new species was discovered two months ago in Capel, and the second just two weeks ago near Mt Romance, north of Denmark by spider-enthusiasts Flynn Prall and James McMulkin.

When they discovered the newest species, Mr Prall and Mr McMulkin sent their photos through to biologist and peacock spider expert, Jurgen Otto who confirmed the species had not been previously identified.

Until recently, Dr Otto believed that most species of peacock spiders had been discovered. However, these new findings have prompted him to reconsider. "This changes my opinion a bit… in particular the south-west seems to be a gift that keeps on giving… the diversity there seems almost endless," said Dr Otto.
