About 250 species observed in Swampscott this weekend!

What a wonderful effort documenting biodiversity locally! Thanks so all who joined the Swampscott Conservancy for our town wide stay-at-home bioblitz for the City Nature Challenge. Together we made over 600 observations and documented about 250 species! If you took photos or recorded sounds over the weekend it isn't too late to add your observations to have them count for the CNC.

Join us in documenting backyard nature during the City Nature Challenge - Apr 24 - 27.

While we can't come together in person this year - we can still share with one another the nature we are seeing in our backyards, out our back doors, and from our front porch! Join us in celebrating Earth Day by adding what you are seeing to our project as we join a global community in documenting the nature around us! Together we will work with people in cities around the world to celebrate the biodiversity around us - wherever we might be! Together we’ll be making and sharing observations as a global community, celebrating the healing power of nature, documenting our local nature as best we can.

Explore Biodiversity Where You Are: To help you explore nature in and around your home, the international CNC organizers have put together a guide with helpful resources. There are even things you can do before the City Nature Challenge starts to attract more species to your yard! https://bit.ly/HomeCNC

The City Nature Challenge is—and always has been—about connecting people and communities with nature. In these challenging times, being outdoors and connecting with nature is a safe and responsible way to cope with stress and get some exercise. Join us in safely connecting with nature and each other! Make and share observations April 24-27, help with identifications April 28–May 3, and celebrate our collective results on May 4.

Please participate in whatever way you can to celebrate nature where you are - whether in your home, in your backyard, from your backdoor or front porch -- and stay safe while doing it. The CNC as a celebration of global biodiversity is a great way to show how connected we all are, and how much we depend on one another and on healthy habitats.

Bioblitz success!

Thanks to everyone who joined us yesterday on the bioblitz. We observed 81 species in town yesterday and added about 40 new species to our total number of species observed in town. It was cold and it was grey, but we hope you had a great, great day! #CityNatureChallenge. We hope you'll join us again for another Swampscott Conservancy event soon.

Winter wonderland...

The intertidal is a wonderful place this time of year, as the frozen sand crunches below your feet and the receding waves leave ice flakes behind. It isn't only the water that causes wonder.... this week dozens of Common Sand Dollars (Echinarachnius parma) were seen along the shore at the Lynn/Swampscott border this week. They dotted the shoreline just below the surface of the sand at low tide with their purple/brown bodies being just visible here and there. Despite the cold temperatures some were active moving through the sand leaving tracks in their wake. What have you been seeing this winter?
