Bioblitz success!

Thanks to everyone who joined us yesterday on the bioblitz. We observed 81 species in town yesterday and added about 40 new species to our total number of species observed in town. It was cold and it was grey, but we hope you had a great, great day! #CityNatureChallenge. We hope you'll join us again for another Swampscott Conservancy event soon.

Second Winter Ocean Bird Date Added!

We had a great morning exploring the bird's that live along Swampscott's Coast. It was so much fun, we hope to do it again next week at 8 am (Feb. 3). We will plan on meeting this time at Red Rock Park in Lynn and after exploring the waters there may then caravan to Fisherman's beach.

Want to know more about waterfowl, ducks, and geese that winter over in our coastal waters? Together we will explore King's beach. We'll set up spotting scopes, help you identify the birds, and answer questions. Novices are welcome--no experience needed! Bring binoculars and bird guides if you have them, we'll have some binoculars on hand to share. Please RSVP (swampscottconservancy@gmail.com) so we can let you know if we have to cancel due to weather. Alternate date 2/3.

Winter wonderland...

The intertidal is a wonderful place this time of year, as the frozen sand crunches below your feet and the receding waves leave ice flakes behind. It isn't only the water that causes wonder.... this week dozens of Common Sand Dollars (Echinarachnius parma) were seen along the shore at the Lynn/Swampscott border this week. They dotted the shoreline just below the surface of the sand at low tide with their purple/brown bodies being just visible here and there. Despite the cold temperatures some were active moving through the sand leaving tracks in their wake. What have you been seeing this winter?
