These are the same taxa. Which name to use is controversial - FNA, Calflora/Jepson still use Stenanthium occidentale but the newer name that ITIS and the PlantList use is Anticlea occidentalis. Since iNat tries to follow Calflora and GoBotany first (using PlantList as a tiebreaker) I suggest we stick with Stenanthium occidentale for now
Hi @stevejones - I agree its annoying that FNA/Calflora/Jepson haven't embraced Anticlea here, but since Calflora and is the taxonomic authority iNat is following for plants in this range, its probably best to go with Stenanthium occidentale and swap over to Anticlea later.
Since these are synonyms though, we needed to do something, so I made this swap going the other way: Anticlea occidentalis -> Stenanthium occidentale for now so at least we resolved this duplication. I deleted your draft Stenanthium occidentale -> Anticlea occidentalis swap which we can remake when Calflora/Jepson adopt this change.
Thanks for your understanding - if I had my way we'd go with Anticlea occidentalis here too, but we said we'd make an effort to follow the rules set out in the curator guide so probably would need a larger discussion to justify going with Anticlea occidentalis for now
Sounds good, Scott, and I agree with your reasoning. Truth is I had forgotten I left that draft hanging. But you're right - they are synonyms and something had to be done. Thanks!
Unintended disagreements occur when a parent (B) is
thinned by swapping a child (E) to another part of the
taxonomic tree, resulting in existing IDs of the parent being interpreted
as disagreements with existing IDs of the swapped child.
Identification
ID 2 of taxon E will be an unintended disagreement with ID 1 of taxon B after the taxon swap
If thinning a parent results in more than 10 unintended disagreements, you
should split the parent after swapping the child to replace existing IDs
of the parent (B) with IDs that don't disagree.
