Chaparral broomrape is a west coast species...this does look like a "broomrape" and I am not familiar with what grows in the east but this photo is difficult to confirm as Aphyllon tuberosum

Orobanche bulbosa is not a valid name anymore. The accepted name for this plant is Aphyllon tuberosum. All american species (accept introduced eurasian species) have been moved to the genus Aphyllon. There are around 95 observations, i removed one from the east coast because it is definitely not Aphyllon. Probably this was the one you mean?
