The Great Backyard Bird Count
Last weekend, my nephew and I participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count for the first time. We walked around the neighborhood, which includes extensive marshland, farmland, and suburban housing. We were out for just over an hour. During that time, we catalogued 7 species: 14 Canada geese, 21 Eurasian widgeons, 23 mallards, 1 California gull, 3 American robins, 40 song sparrows, and 2 red-winged blackbirds. The song sparrows and the red-winged blackbirds followed me from tree to tree, calling to me.
