During my first 5 min observation period (11:55 a.m. to 12 Noon CDT) at a patch of Lantana during the eclipse event, I counted the following:
grass skippers* (8)
Cabbage White (1)
Common Buckeye (1)
At 30 minutes before totality, I looked for butterflies in my garden. I have more than a dozen butterfly bushes, which tend to attract many types of pollinators. While I did notice a very obvious absence of honeybees — I usually see at least 6 - 10 any time I'm near my garden — there were a very typical number and species of butterflies., including Cabbage butterfly, Silver Spotted Skipper, Great Spangled Fritillary, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Spicebush Swallowtail, and several little brown butterflies — Skippers and Dashes that I couldn't identify quickly.
NOTE: Photo was taken on day of eclipse but was not taken during observation period.

I'm just going to throw this out there.... My 3 cats were extremely clingy & affectionate for about 10 hours after the eclipse. Not that I minded. But the next day they were back to their normal level of affection.
Photo taken 4 hours 15 minutes after totality.
Birds (some kind of swallow) were flying high above the Adler Planetarium before the eclipse. Closer to totality (87 per cent in Chicago) they dropped down to about 5 feet above our heads. Flying in all directions and chirping loudly. Swarms of flying insects were also at ground level at this time. Didn't notice any birds swooping in to eat the bugs.
