Saw Coyote around 5:30 AM at kaposia landing while walking my dog (leashed) with my wife. Coyote was not bold, but not skittish either, doing it's own thing, walking around, sniffing the ground. I was able to approach up to about 40 yards before it got uncomfortable and bounded away to get about 60 yards distance. We walked away at that point, then the coyote returned to the spot it was originally at.

I never realized how hard it is to tell Gray Fox and Kit Fox apart, at least for me. I'd be grateful to know of any key field marks that can be used from these photos. Maybe the ears are too small for Kit Fox?

Franklin Canyon
This coyote came running up the road. Even the the park is closed to vehicles, apparently some vehicles are allowed in at the southern end of the park as the coyote was followed by three vehicles. Since it was trapped between those cars and me it veered off and ran up a hillside

Red Fox would have white tip on tail so points to Gray Fox. Red fox would have black socks and Gray would not.But the black extends well up the leg. Note black ears. Very small white spot on chest. Gray has stripe down the tail as does this one. Face more cat-like pointing toward Gray Fox. My vote is Gray. INat repeatedly suggested Arctic Fox - nope and Gray was way down the list. But I think this is a Gray Fox color phase with black points. Hope to see kits any day now.

Red fox trotted through the neighbor's yard and into our small patch of woods, then curled up and rested for about 5 minutes, head up and still alert, but lying down. Then it went back the way it came, using a downed tree to hop the wire fence (see photo), and disappeared behind the knoll. We could see it was wearing a GPS collar, which is how I discovered this project existed. :)
