Singing from ~15ft up in a smallish spruce tree, by far the best view I've had of one so far. I almost caught it but unfortunately it got away. For the audio I took 2 clips from a 3 minute recording, the cars would not give me a break.

These emerged from a fuzzy white sack which had a (presumably parasitoidized) caterpillar (Copper Underwing) adjacent. It took about a week for them to hatch after I found the caterpillar ( it took me a day or two to guess what was going on). The egg sack was attached to a Motherwort leaf.

Is there anything else close to a Black Widow Spider in Massachusetts? I'm no expert but from Iseeing examples in zoos and TV shows, this seems unmistakable to me!

Found along the Red Dot Trail about 200 ft from the service road to the summit. It is in a hollowed out part of the base of a small tree. The web appears to be random strands rather than an orb or a trap door. Somewhere around an inch long (didn't try to measure!). It stayed in position as I took pictures all around it. Good thing that it isn't a jumping spider! I did not try to coax it out to see the abdomen better, but I see at least two red spots toward the rear. There are other colorations along the side.

Description

It was a cold, raw day, raining hard and clouds sweeping over the cliffs. The vulture came out of the fog. Huge wingspan, certainly the largest I have seen on any bird, and circled once of twice before landing. It settled for about 20 seconds and was then chased off by crows. It was Carolines' birthday, which made it all the more special.
