An amazing butterfly day!

Going for a morning hike along the Kaibob Trail as it passes through the Saddle Mountain Wilderness along the east Rim of the Grand Canyon, there was a field of these yellow Asteraceae and a greater diversity of butterflies than I had ever seen in my life. There were at least a dozen species and hundreds of individuals. The birding trip quickly morphed into a butterfly photography trip. I tried to photograph all of the species I saw, but several including at least one large fritillary and a swallowtail eluded me.

I think this might be Tremella mesenterica. It was growing on oak, there was no visible Stereum, and it appeared to be paler, more yellow and less golden colored, and more translucent than the more common Tremella aurantia seen in the area. It also mentions in the book, Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast, that T. mesenterica has a more simple fruit body of one to several leafy lobes vs. the brain like mass usually formed by T. aurantia.

This species is endemic to a small region of coastal tropical rainforest below Cape York.

This is either a Masked or a Nazca Booby. Sentiment among the Birders-that-Be (of which I am emphatically not one...) seems to be leaning slightly towards Nazca. I'm basing my ID on that, plus what looks to me like a pale-pinkish tinge to the base of the bill, and some white in and around the base of the tail. This ID is very tentative, though, and I'll be revisiting it as the prevailing views of the people around here who actually know what they're doing evolve.
