Description

Observation: Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota)

  • Date and Time: 5/6/24, around 5:45 PM
  • Location: Oxnard, CA, US

Identification:

  • Confirmed Features: Squared-off tails and dark blue-black coloration with a white forehead and a brick-red face are distinctly visible, confirming the species.

Habitat:

  • Description: Observed under the eaves and overhangs of houses, where multiple mud nests have been constructed. This is typical of the Cliff Swallow's preference for man-made structures to support their colonial nesting habits.

Behavior and Colony Size:

  • Activities Observed: Active nest building and distinctive repetitive flight patterns. The birds were observed flying in groups of 10-15.
  • Colony Dynamics: There are approximately 30 to 40 birds in the area, indicating a healthy and active colony.

Weather Conditions:

  • General Weather: Clear skies were noted at the time of observation, which is conducive to their evening activities.

Fun Fact:

  • Social and Engineering Marvels: Cliff Swallows are not just social birds; they are also incredible architects. Their communal nests are not only made of mud but are engineered in a gourd-like shape, each with an extended entrance tunnel that protects the young from predators and weather elements. This architectural design showcases their ability to adapt and thrive in communal living spaces, even in urban environments.

Additional Observations:

  • Peak Activity Time: More pronounced activity in nest building and group flying was noted in the evening around the time of observation, indicating a possible peak in daily activity during this time.

Description

Not long after I took its picture, this Red-tailed Hawk captured a young Raven from a nest. It caused quite a stir. Later, the hawk with the baby raven secured in its beak, was ambushed by a Raven who dove down and ripped it out of the Hawks mouth. During the tug of war for the baby bird, the two adults pinwheeled down from the sky until the hawk let go. Ravens and Crows throughout the area were greatly disturbed for over a half hour.
