Hairy Sea-Mat Electra pilosa

Observer

Description

A potful of joy - brought home with copious field notes, 30 photos and an eagerness to learn.
The samples all came from a recently stranded Laminaria hyperborea frond. All epiphytes on kelp are worth investigating. The pictures show 4 seaweed species, a lovely encrusting sponge and, on the little red seaweed Membranoptera alata, luxurious colonies of Electra pilosa.
These encrusting colonial bryozoans are a treat for the eyes.
Electra pilosa gets its name from the tall 'spines', no more than fine hairs really, that come up from the side of each cell - Pilose, "covered with long soft hairs".
I discovered that the cell sides are perforated - see that?.
