The new Computer Vision and Geomodel with over 1,500 new taxa

I hope everyone is having a great September. We released a computer vision and geomodel update v.2.34 today with 123,618 taxa (compared to 122,046 taxa in the last model). It is trained off data exported on August 2, 2026.

This model is the result of millions of observations and identifications shared on iNaturalist. As new taxa are observed and identified, taxa (mostly species, but also genera, families, etc.) are added to the model once there are around 100 photos and 60 observations of that taxon.

As taxonomy changes and misidentifications get corrected by the community, sometimes taxa are also removed from the model. To keep up with these changes, we update the model every month or two so that the community can benefit from the improvements. Check out our help page for the most updated information on how we update the model.

Below are links to the taxa added since the last model. You can click through and search for your username to see if you have observed or identified any of these species. If so, thank you!

The graph below shows how the number of taxa included in the model has grown over the last few years — more than doubling from 55,000 in 2022 to over 123,000 today.

Each time we release a new model, we evaluate it against the previous one.

The graph below shows model accuracy estimates using 1,000 random Research Grade observations in each group not seen during training time. The paired bars below compare average accuracy of model 2.33 with the new model 2.34.

Chile's largest land snail, to scale

The Chilean Black Snail (Macrocyclis peruvianus) is the only living species in its genus, and the largest land snail in Chile. It’s also a snail that eats other snails, along with mushrooms. Pablo Silva Reyes (@sur_endemico) photographed this one in Parque Nacional Alerce Costero, in the Valdivian rainforest of southern Chile.

There are just over 320 observations of Macrocyclis peruvianus on iNaturalist. Pablo is based in Valdivia, where he trained as an agricultural engineer and now does environmental outreach. Read on for his story, in his words! (Some quotes have been lightly edited for clarity.)

“We have a large group of friends with whom we visit nature reserves in search of new species to unlock. In the case of the black snail, it was after a visit from a great friend, @chrisvaldes — who curates mushrooms on the platform — along with Juan Alarcón and @leo_hormaros34. On that occasion, while we were sampling and photographing some mushroom species in the reserve, Juan told us he’d found a black snail, so our attention turned to this specimen. That’s why we used the ruler — which we’d been using to measure small mushrooms as a scale in our photographs. We’ve seen this large snail on several occasions, but we’d never taken photos of it with a ruler to better convey the size of this forest giant.”

“My interest in nature began at a very young age, with a deep admiration for insects, inspired by TV shows I watched as a child, such as ‘La Ley de la Selva,’ for example. On top of that, Valdivia is a very green city, surrounded by what we call a temperate rainforest. So I was fortunate enough to grow up surrounded by many insects in my backyard, which I began collecting so I could observe them more closely. Unfortunately, this interest was set aside for quite some time, and later my professional training (agricultural engineering) led me down the path of fieldwork, where I rediscovered my passion with a deep interest in native flora, birdwatching, fungi, insects, and so on. Biodiversity in general.”

“Mi interés en la naturaleza partió desde muy pequeño, con una profunda admiración por los insectos, motivada por programas que daban en la televisión cuando era pequeño, como ‘La Ley de la Selva’ por ejemplo. A esto le debemos sumar que Valdivia es una ciudad muy verde, y está rodeada por lo que denominamos bosque templado lluvioso. Así que tuve la fortuna de crecer junto a muchos insectos en el patio, con los cuales inicié mis primeras colectas para poder observarlos más de cerca. Lamentablemente esto quedó de lado por un buen tiempo y luego mi formación profesional (Ingeniería agrícola) me llevó al camino del trabajo en campo, en donde retomé mi pasión con un profundo interés por la flora nativa, el avistamiento de aves, los hongos, los insectos etc etc. Biodiversidad en general.”

“As a true Pokémon fan, I once heard someone talk about a real-life Pokédex, which really caught my attention, so I installed the app on my phone in 2020, not knowing that it would become one of my favorite platforms. At the time, I was learning to identify native plants, and it helped me a lot. I realized that if I uploaded a species and identified it, I wouldn’t forget its name afterward, and even if I did, I knew I could look it up on my profile since I’d already seen it — it worked as a great memory aid. Then I began my foray into semi-professional photography, and that’s when I decided to upload everything I photographed. It really helped me delve into other taxonomic groups I wasn’t familiar with and also meet experts in different groups.”

“Como buen fan de Pokémon, en algún momento escuché a alguien hablar de una Pokédex real, lo que llamó mucho mi atención, por lo que instalé la app en mi celular el 2020, sin saber que se convertiría en una de mis plataformas favoritas. En ese tiempo estaba aprendiendo a identificar plantas nativas y me sirvió mucho, me di cuenta que si subía una especie y la identificaba, después no se me olvidaba su nombre, y en el caso de que fuera así, sabía que podía buscarlo en mi perfil pues ya lo había visto, funcionó como una gran ayuda de memoria. Macrocyclis peruvianus is a very interesting species; it is the largest terrestrial mollusk in Chile and plays an important role in regulating fungal populations and recycling organic matter. Together with a team led by @rodrigo_barahona_13, we conducted nighttime surveys in search of terrestrial planarians (Geoplanidae) for a study in our area, and it’s always a pleasure to come across a black snail — we’ve seen more of them on these nighttime outings than during the day.”

As it happens, one of the black snail’s main predators is another land planarian, Polycladus gayi.

What sharing an observation can lead to

“Citizen science has played a very important role in recent times. Given the limited funding and time that researchers in Chile typically have, the help provided by having more eyes on the ground is greatly appreciated — especially if they provide good photographs and observational data. Personally, a while back while conducting fieldwork in Oncol Park, Valdivia, together with a friend, @manuelcorvalan, we found a species of Cyperaceae from the genus Carex. We were specifically looking for species we couldn’t identify, and I find this group quite complex; fortunately, there are very active users who specialize in this group, such as @paulaceae and @pjimmej. When we uploaded the data, they realized it was a species not previously recorded in Chile, so this report was added to the article ‘Miscellaneous chorological, nomenclatural, and taxonomic notes on Carex (Cyperaceae) from South America, including the description of three new species’ by Muñoz-Schüler et al. 2026. This demonstrates just how useful it is to share these observations on the platform. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that we’re currently finishing a short article on the distribution range of a species for which there is little data from Chile. Together with @javiantum, we’ve been able to collect the species in new regions thanks to a record from @elecho and an incidental observation — where we noticed the species’ presence because it was in the background of the species that was photographed for the observation! We hope to have more news soon.”

“La ciencia ciudadana ha jugado un rol muy importante en el último tiempo, el poco financiamiento y tiempo que suelen tener los investigadores en Chile, hace que sea muy bien recibida la ayuda de tener más ojos en terreno y sobre todo si tienen buenas fotografías y datos de la observación. Personalmente, hace un tiempo realizando un terreno en Parque Oncol, Valdivia, junto a un amigo @manuelcorvalan encontramos una especie de cyperácea del género Carex, en particular andábamos buscando especies que no identificábamos y este grupo me parece bastante complejo, pero por suerte hay usuarios muy activos que se especializan en este grupo como @paulaceae y @pjimmej. Four new members of the iNaturalist team

We have some more new faces on the iNaturalist team, now making us a staff of 26! Here’s who they are and a little about what they’re working on.


New Staff Members

Brittany Bailey

Brittany Bailey, Staff Accountant

Brittany is a nonprofit accounting professional, with a background in outdoor education. She’s excited to combine her love of spreadsheets and nature in her role at iNaturalist. She holds a BA in Anthropology from James Madison University. Originally from Virginia, she now lives in Colorado with her partner and dog. She loves reading, paddling, and watching hockey, and her favorite animal is the North American river otter.

Mary Jantsch

Mary Jantsch, Sr. Manager of Community Moderation & Curation

Mary is a community and operations leader who has spent over a decade building programs that help people work well together. She first came to iNaturalist as an observer, then began identifying, and recently joined the team to support the network of curators and moderators. Mary lives in San Francisco, and when she’s not click-clacking away at her keyboard, you’re likely to find her growing native plants or turning a quick walk into an unexpectedly long one.

Patricia Sazama, Computer Vision/Machine Learning Engineer

Patricia is a machine learning engineer from Maryland with over a decade of experience building ML systems. She’s a lifelong nature nerd with a soft spot for fungi and frogs, and joined iNaturalist to point her technical work toward the natural world. Outside of work, you’ll usually find her wandering the woods with her partner, toddler, and dog, converting her lawn into a wildflower meadow, or sketching landscapes with more enthusiasm than skill.

Marissa Kolarosky

Marissa Kolarosky, Major Gifts Officer

Marissa is a nonprofit fundraising professional who brings more than a decade of experience connecting people with causes they care about. Before joining iNaturalist, she was the Assistant Director of Philanthropy at the ACLU of Pennsylvania. As a nature enthusiast and amateur mycologist, she is especially drawn to the connections that form when people get curious about the natural world. Marissa lives in Pittsburgh, PA where she can often be found hiking, foraging for mushrooms, tending to an ever-growing collection of houseplants, or exploring outside with her dogs and whatever foster rescue is staying with her at the moment.

You can now search and sort through your observations on the iNaturalist iPhone app!

Many of you have likely been out iNatting with someone and wanted to show them one of your previous observations on the iNaturalist mobile app. Until now, searching your own observations on the app was a many-step process ... but starting today, you'll be able to easily search and sort through your observations!

Use the magnifying glass icon to search your observations and species sightings!

You can tap the new search icon in the top right of your "Me" page of the app and look up any taxon. Your observations and species tabs will filter to match. When you tap a species in the species tab, you're taken directly to all your observations of that species. There's also a new sort button in the bottom right of the "Me" page that allows you to look at your observations by date added or observed.

You can press the button in the bottom right corner of the screen to sort through your own observations and species sightings. Additionally, there is a new map view for you to easily look at where you've made your observations.

This updated functionality to the mobile app has been one of our most-requested features, and we're excited that you all get to try it out now! You can find more details about how to search and sort your observations at iNatHelp.

A few additional notes:

  • This is currently available for the new iNaturalist iPhone app.
  • Right now, this functionality won't be able to sort alphabetically or by taxonomy — iNat dynamically swaps displayed names based on geographic location and user settings, meaning a single species can have multiple conflicting, overlapping, or shifting names depending on where you view it.
  • If you'd like to access more advanced filtering for observations, please continue using the "Explore" page of the app to do so.
  • Stay tuned for even more exciting updates to the functionality of the "Me" page and the "Explore" page in the future!

There’s beauty in grass | Identifier Profile: @kevinfaccenda

In 2021, Kevin Faccenda (@kevinfaccenda) started walking the University of Hawai’i campus, collecting every grass he could find. Right outside the botany building, he found one that had never been recorded in Hawai’i (Urochloa glumaris), and he’s been working on grass taxonomy ever since.

Kevin studied invasive grasses for his PhD at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, and his main identification focus on iNaturalist is grasses of the Pacific. Read on for more about his story, in his words! (Some quotes have been lightly edited for clarity.)


“I grew up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. My Dad is a horticulturalist, so we were always gardening together, which ignited my love for plants. In high school I joined the Nature Club run by Brian Suter and competed in the Pennsylvania Envirothon. Since I already had some experience with plants, I focused on the forestry section and learned the trees of Pennsylvania; I would go into the woods behind the school after classes with my copy of Plants of Pennsylvania and try to find as many plants as possible. From there my interests spiraled smaller and smaller into shrubs, herbs, ferns, grasses, Carex, and eventually, leafy liverworts (Cuspidatula labrifolia is an especially cool one if you’ve never heard of this group before). In college at Millersville University, I became involved with the herbarium and learned even more plants from the dried specimens. Chris Hardy is the curator there and his mentorship led directly to my focusing on more and more ‘difficult’ plants.”

“I moved to Hawai’i for graduate school and became involved with the herbaria there, especially the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, which has the largest collection of Hawaiian and Pacific plants in the world. I focused my research on invasive plants and eventually found about 70 new naturalized species for the islands of Hawai’i. I did a lot of fieldwork, both for work and pleasure, and any time I ran into a species I was unfamiliar with, I collected it for the herbarium or uploaded it to iNat. I’ve since graduated and moved to Saint Louis, Missouri, where I’m excited to be living in a place with significant Carex diversity; Hawai’i only has a dozen species compared to over 100 in Missouri.”

“I chose grasses because they are the most diverse family of plants in Hawai’i, with about 300 species, many of which are poorly understood. I initially wanted to study the ecology of these grasses but switched to taxonomy, history, and biogeography. The watershed moment that locked me into grass taxonomy rather than ecology was when I started walking around the University of Hawai’i campus in 2021 collecting every grass I could find, trying to learn the common urban species. I found a new weedy species that had never been reported from Hawai’i before, Urochloa glumaris. Since it was growing directly outside of the Botany building, I realized that there was much work to do on grass taxonomy and identification and proceeded to spend several years researching exactly that.”

From lifelist to research

“I started seriously using iNaturalist when I moved to Hawai’i to learn the flora and organize my photos and field notes, which is what first brought me to the site. In Pennsylvania I mostly learned through the written flora (Plants of Pennsylvania) but the equivalent version for Hawai’i (Manual of Flowering Plants of Hawai’i) was quite out of date, missing hundreds of non-native species, making iNaturalist a more comprehensive resource for non-native plants. I learn a lot through identifying other people’s observations. I regularly encounter species I haven’t seen before, and if there are high-quality photos, there might be enough information that you can key it out — or perhaps somebody’s already identified it and you can confirm that identification and learn a new species.”

“iNat helped me learn about thousands of species, although perhaps I spend too much of my time outside photographing things now. It’s difficult to go out in the forest and leave my phone in my pocket these days since I always feel like I might get an observation of some significance if I were to get another photograph. The FOMO of not taking a photo for my iNat pokedex lifelist sometimes gets to me.”

“I also use iNaturalist data for research and have published several papers using it for new records of non-native species, correcting identifications of misapplied names in the Hawaiian flora, species distribution modeling, and updating the full checklist of vascular plants of Hawai’i. I also have a website where I have maps of every grass that occurs in Hawai’i, most of the points mapped there came from iNaturalist.”

Grass blindness

“A lot of people throw their hands up at grasses because they’re a ‘difficult group’, but so are all megadiverse families. Asters are a much larger family and often just as difficult to identify, but I don’t tend to hear people dismiss them as eagerly as they dismiss grasses. Grasses seem to carry an especially strong and persistent stigma against them. As Howard Thomas said in Grass Blindness: ‘Some plants are born invisible, some achieve invisibility, and some have invisibility thrust upon them. Grasses are a case in point.’ I’m now in a position where I can identify many grasses rather easily. If I can get some people to pay more attention to grasses because they know they can get ID help from me, then I’m accomplishing my goal of pulling the cloak of invisibility away from grasses.

“Grasses are the most ecologically and culturally important family of plants in the world. As in Isaiah: ‘All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.’ While I am not one to take bible verses literally, truly the majority of the calories we eat come from cereal grasses including wheat, rice, maize, oats, barley, sorghum, millet, and rye; or livestock who were fed these. There is beauty in grass and I hope more people can come to recognize it.

How Kevin identifies

“The first resource that I usually check when I’m trying to identify a plant that I don’t personally know is the observations seen nearby on iNaturalist, using the explore page to scroll through the photos of the genus or family. Then I compare many photos for each species to get a sense of the variation within each species. If that doesn’t work, I’ll usually try a regional flora, like the Manual of the Flowering Plants of Hawai’i, Flora of China, or Weakley’s Flora of the Southeastern United States and use the dichotomous keys there. I also try to use identification keys from those regional floras to learn identification characters in case some observations on iNat are misidentified.”

“Another resource I often use is Plants of the World Online. It has a Checklist Builder feature where you can enter any country or state and get a checklist of all the plants in the family or genus you’re looking at. From there, you can kind of brute force your way through this list, looking at photos on iNaturalist, or at herbarium specimen images until you find something close. Herbarium specimen images are super valuable as there are a lot of species missing from iNaturalist from tropical regions. I especially like the Smithsonian’s database, but I will also search GBIF using the filter ‘Basis Of Record = Preserved Specimen’ to get herbarium specimen images.”

How to photograph a grass

For grasses and sedges, Kevin suggests always taking photos of at least four features:

  1. The full inflorescence of the grass. If you put your hand behind the inflorescence that usually helps smartphones to focus. The CV is actually pretty decent with grasses if you give it a clear inflorescence photo. It does very poorly with leaves however, as would be expected given the importance of flowers for grass ID.
  2. A macro of the flowers as close as your camera can focus sharply. For grasses, try to rotate the spikelet so you are looking at it side-on and can see the zig-zag of the overlapping lemmas.”
  3. A photo of the whole plant showing the leaves and the inflorescence all in one to get a general size and habit reference.”
  4. The leaf collar region including the ligule. This is where a leaf diverges from the culm of the grass (grasses don’t have stems in the way that other plants do, so we use the word culm instead).”

And also … “Bonus but often not necessary: Rhizomes or stolons if present, leaf surface, habitat/landscape.”

Kevin’s advice for new identifiers

Be bold when you identify and leave your ego at the door. I hear from a lot of people who are kind of intimidated by identifying for fear of getting something wrong. Misidentifications are inevitable; I withdraw misidentifications nearly every day based on my notifications. I really appreciate these corrections as they help me learn about characters or species I may have never recognized before. Other identifiers are also usually very helpful to explain these things and I’ve had great conversations regarding observations that I initially misidentified. And if you are confident that an ID is wrong but aren’t sure exactly what the correct ID is, adding a disagreeing ID and pushing the community taxon back to the genus, family, or even further is very valuable to reset the identification process and hopefully get the erroneous ID withdrawn.”

Community science has extraordinary power to connect people back to nature. In a time when most people live in cities and many people don’t know an oak tree from a hickory, let alone any sort of grass-like plant, getting people to pay attention and connect to the natural world is incredibly important. Given the scale of the biodiversity crisis we’re currently experiencing as we experience the sixth mass extinction, I hope that iNaturalist will help create a new generation of biodiversity-aware people who can advocate for the ecosystems that sustain us.”

Most iNaturalist records of this harvestman species come from one New Zealand ranger

If you’re not looking closely, Algidia viridata ssp. bicolor can really vanish against moss. Sebastian Doak (@sebastiandoak) photographed this one on a February night in the Charleston Conservation Area, on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island.

There are 31 observations of Algidia viridata on iNaturalist. Sebastian has made 22 of them. He’s lived and worked in Paparoa National Park for about eleven years, where he’s a ranger at the visitor centre. Read on for his story, in his words! (Some quotes have been lightly edited for clarity.)


“Since my first observation of Algidia viridata in April 2020, a period where the world got a little strange for a while, I became fascinated by this animal, and how well it blends into the environment around it. With a body of only about 2x4mm and longer spindly legs, it was always a challenge to find them. Until I found that using a UV light is basically a cheat code to finding harvestmen, since so many of them fluoresce. Still, you need to know the right sort of locations to look.”

“On my work weekends, I usually try and get out one night if the conditions are right and try to increase my species count for my ecozone. I am always looking out for harvestmen, including this one, but once again I was trying to improve my photos of this species, so I spent a bit of time with it.”

“As a member of the neurodiverse iNat community, I wasn’t diagnosed ASD until my adult years, but clues were there pretty early, including an early childhood interest in the taxonomy of spiders — a lifelong interest that has since expanded to other groups. My mum was often in the garden, and very relaxed with all the garden critters, including not being worried about handling white-tailed spiders, a spider with a common myth of causing necrotising fasciitis. Something I now keep needing to debunk for people.”

“In high school, I never considered that studying something you enjoyed was a possibility, so I didn’t take biology, and due to certain learning challenges, didn’t manage to pass high school … I got into university under special admission. I found university so much easier than high school, being able to mostly self-direct my learning, and I completed my degree in behavioural ecology. The next six years were mostly whatever jobs I could get, including a couple years on cruise ships, before getting my first position with the Department of Conservation … I feel privileged to now have a job where I get to infodump about different species to people actively seeking information about them.”

Learning about harvestmen

“Before using iNaturalist, I mostly only knew of the introduced European harvestmen in our gardens growing up, and some of the large chelicera native species in my new home on the West Coast. Then when I posted one of my harvestmen pics, I got a positive response and ID from Shahan Derkarabetian (@sclerobunus), which made me want to find more. The positivity continued, and that’s pretty much where my love for harvestmen started. Like with many invertebrates, there are still countless species to find.”

“Ever since I left the family home, I have travelled, but since getting into iNaturalist, I build most of my trips now around trying to document various invertebrates, with a strong lean on harvestmen. Before that, I had mostly visited countries in Asia, but in the past several years I have started working my way through South American countries — Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia.”

@tsssss is a legend for identifying South American species, often being able to identify my images as iNaturalist firsts from original descriptions from about 100 years ago. Adriano B. Kury (@adrik29) both produces a ton of research and descriptions of South American species, as well as runs an awesome project to make harvestmen research accessible through the Omnipaper project.”

“With the work of these people, I am relatively confident that some of my observations are currently undescribed genera, such as this pied harvestman with spines reminiscent of the bunny harvestman. My fave seemingly undescribed genera are these prostygnids which I found near Cosanga in Ecuador. I haven’t seen anything remotely like them.”

“I would also like to shout out Erin Powell (@erincpow) for her work building on the legacy of Ray Forster in New Zealand harvestmen. New Zealand has many interesting harvestmen, like this crazy clawed Forsteropsalis fabulosa I found near Haast.”

Sebastian’s advice for those new to iNaturalist

Check out the website. So many times I have shown people things on the iNaturalist website and once I showed them how easy it is to navigate through and check out images and observations across groups, locations and more, many of them seemed to have their interest rekindled. There is so much more to iNaturalist than just getting identifications.”

Ask questions. iNaturalist can be a daunting experience with mountains of information. The experience I have had when asking people for more information, and seeing their passion come through, has been inspiring. If someone is correcting you, it’s not as much them calling you out, as much as wanting to get you on the right track. Especially with the high number of neurodiverse people, sometimes the information can come across ‘sharply,’ but know that is almost always meant sincerely.”

“I very much believe in the power of community in onboarding people with a passing interest into becoming truly passionate about nature. New Zealand, like many countries, faces several pressures to ecosystems, and understanding what we risk losing is an important part of the story in gaining funding and momentum to protect the special places we have here, and anywhere. The more people who are connected with nature, the more people are inspired to look after it.

The new Computer Vision and Geomodel with over 1,500 new taxa

Happy August, everyone! We released a computer vision and geomodel update v.2.33 today with 122,046 taxa (compared to 120,311 taxa in the last model). It is trained off data exported on June 28, 2026.

This model is the result of millions of observations and identifications shared on iNaturalist. As new taxa are observed and identified, taxa (mostly species, but also genera, families, etc.) are added to the model once there are around 100 photos and 60 observations of that taxon.

As taxonomy changes and misidentifications get corrected by the community, sometimes taxa are also removed from the model. To keep up with these changes, we update the model every month or two so that the community can benefit from the improvements. Check out our help page for the most updated information on how we update the model.

Below are links to the taxa added since the last model. You can click through and search for your username to see if you have observed or identified any of these species. If so, thank you!

The graph below shows how the number of taxa included in the model has grown over the last few years — more than doubling from 55,000 in 2022 to over 120,000 today.

Each time we release a new model, we evaluate it against the previous one.

The graph below shows model accuracy estimates using 1,000 random Research Grade observations in each group not seen during training time. The paired bars below compare average accuracy of model 2.32 with the new model 2.33.

Frequently Asked Questions from the Smartphone Photography Webinar

We got nearly 1,000 questions during the webinar and couldn't get to them all live. Here are the ones that came up most often.


Are clip-on macro lenses worth it?

A clip-on macro lens will get you closer to a small subject than your phone can on its own, and they're cheap enough to be worth trying. The catch is depth of field: at that magnification you may only have a millimeter or two in focus at a time. Before you buy anything, check whether your phone already has a macro mode — several recent models do. If you have a clip-on and can't get it to focus, tap and hold on an area in focus, which will lock focus at that distance. Slowly tilt the entire device forward and back until you get what you want in focus. The focus distance is fixed and very short.


How do I get my phone to focus on the small thing instead of the background?

Tapping the screen where your subject is will usually lock focus there. When it won't — a spider in a web, an insect on a grass stem — use the focus lock technique described above, or put your hand behind or near the subject without touching it and focus on your fingers instead. That gives the camera something solid at the same distance, and your subject comes out sharp. It's fine to leave your hand in the frame. A sharp photo with fingers in it is more useful to identifiers than a blurry one without.


Should I zoom in, or take the shot and crop later?

Get physically closer if you can. If your phone has a dedicated telephoto lens, using it does the same thing. But many phones label a zoom level "2x" that isn't a separate lens — it's a crop of the main sensor — and past that point most phones use software to reconstruct detail. If you're not sure which yours is doing, take the wider shot and crop it yourself afterward. You keep the original, and nothing has been added to the photo that wasn't there. That said, using zoom is generally acceptable.


My phone applies AI "enhancement" automatically. Is that a problem? How much editing is acceptable?

Photos and sounds on iNaturalist are evidence, so they should accurately reflect the organism and the scene. Cropping and standard adjustments are fine; edits that change what was there — generative fill, removing parts of the scene, AI upscaling — are not. If your phone is doing this on its own, you're fine. Smartphones make many automatic enhancements that the photographer has little to no control over, and these generally fall within the realm of acceptability, but this technology is changing quickly. Our Help page on acceptable editing techniques has the full lists. If you come across a photo or sound you believe is entirely artificially generated, you can flag it.


Any tips for photographing moths and other insects at night?

A separate light source gives you more control than your phone's flash. A headlamp or small flashlight held off to one side lights the subject without washing it out. Low light also means slower shutter speeds, so brace the phone against something solid if you can.


How many photos should one observation have? Do blurry ones hurt?

Add as many photos as it takes to show the features that matter — there's no set number, and more angles help the community confirm the identification. Order matters: iNaturalist's computer vision generates its suggestions from a single photo, which defaults to the first one, so lead with your clearest shot. Blurry photos are acceptable evidence, so keep the soft ones too, and identify to the level the evidence supports.


Should I include a coin or ruler for scale?

Size can be a distinguishing feature, so a scale reference helps — but a coin or ruler isn't required, and a fingertip next to the subject works. If you don't have anything handy, note the approximate size in the observation's description field instead.


How much surrounding context should a photo include?

In many cases it helps to show the surrounding context of the organism you're observing. We recommend making sure you have at least one good, close-up shot of the focal organism as the first photo of the observation, and then include a photo of it with its surroundings as an additional observation photo.


Can I add a video? What about sound recordings?

iNaturalist doesn't accept videos, but you can pull a still frame out of a video and upload that instead. Sound recordings are accepted, and for birds and frogs a recording is often better evidence than a photo. Drag wav, mp3, or m4a files into the uploader on the website, or record sounds directly in the mobile apps. Here's how.


I accidentally posted several photos of the same organism as separate observations. Can I combine them?

Yes, though it takes a workaround. There's currently no one-click merge, so the approach is to pick the observation you want to keep (usually the one that already has identifications and comments), add the other photos to it, and then delete the extras. I don't want my observations pinpointed to my home. And how are rare species protected?

If you're concerned about sharing the location of a particular observation, you're welcome to obscure the location or make it private — here's how to edit its geoprivacy. iNaturalist also automatically obscures the location of species with special status. You as the observer can see the true coordinates, but others cannot. Learn more about geoprivacy and when locations are automatically obscured vs. user-obscured.


Tips from the iNat Community

  • Breathe out before you take a photo. Take a breath, let it out, and press the shutter in the pause that follows. Your hands are often steadiest at that point!
  • Use something other than the on-screen shutter button. Tapping the screen moves the phone at the moment it captures the photo. The side or volume button can give you a firmer grip. A Bluetooth shutter remote can also be useful (and not too expensive). Most Android phones can also be set up to fire the shutter on a voice command, which helps when you're holding the phone at an angle where you can't easily reach the buttons.
  • Turn the phone upside down to get low shots. The lens sits near one end of the phone, so flipping it puts the glass much closer to the ground. Useful for mushrooms, mosses, and other low-growing subjects.
  • Take a video and pull a frame out of it. For subjects that won't hold still, a few seconds of video can give you multiple chances at a sharp frame instead of one. Scrub through it afterward and export the best one.
  • Keep a tape measure in your bag. For plants it's the simplest way to show scale in a photo.

New Staff Members

Aishwarya Sivakumar

Aishwarya Sivakumar, User Insights & Analytics Manager

Aishwarya blends qualitative research with analytics to understand how people experience iNaturalist across the apps, website, and Seek. Her background spans healthcare and fintech, where she saw firsthand how user trust is built in the small, everyday details of a product. She brings that same attention to iNaturalist, helping the team spot friction points and shape decisions that make the platform more enjoyable and trustworthy for the community. Outside of research, Aishwarya can be found baking, spending time outdoors, or hosting sci-fi movie nights at home in Texas.

Jen Udan

Jen Udan, Technical Delivery Manager

Jen is a delivery manager and software engineer who has worked for various startups, major brands, and nonprofits. She has contributed to open data projects and has done volunteer work for nonprofits in Texas and around the world. At iNaturalist, she keeps engineering work moving across the website, the mobile apps, and Seek, making sure projects get finished and shipped. Jen has lived in Austin since 2003 and remembers hanging out with Leslie and keeping things weird. When she’s not working on open-source projects, you can find Jen baking pies, discovering new eats, and petting all the dogs in her vicinity.

Erin O’Malley

Erin O’Malley, Fundraising Operations Associate

Erin is a nonprofit fundraising professional with experience coordinating operations for institutional, board, and major giving. Previously, they served as an Associate at Advance Collaborative, where they supported the development and strategic planning efforts of 14+ nonprofit and foundation clients. They live in New York City, where they can be found taking pictures of red-eared slider turtles in Prospect Park and picking up their books on hold at their local library branch.

Our Product Goals for July–December 2026

In January, we published an overview of our plans for the product in the first six months of the year. In this post, we reflect on how those plans played out and lay out our goals for the next six months. We plan to continue this cadence of biannual updates going forward.

As ever, the iNaturalist platform is built on two things: a passionate community and high-quality data. Our product goals for the second half of 2026 are organized under two of the core pillars that drive our work: People and Science.

Looking back

Here's an update on everything we said we'd do since January. We're proud of what we shipped, and transparent about where we fell short.

People

Among our highest priorities was improving the experience in our flagship iNaturalist app. Here's what we've been up to in the iNaturalist app:

  • Improved performance. We made major progress here, though we have more work to do. Breakthroughs in early June resulted in much faster performance of the mobile app overall: My Observations and Activity load much quicker with less lagginess, and we saw an immediate, measurable decrease in negative feedback about app performance.
  • Limited Android beta. Kicked off in early July, but invite-only to a select group of users, including our international Network partners. The open beta is coming sometime between September and November.
  • Searching and sorting in My Observations. One of our top requested features for the mobile app is underway and expected to release in early August. You'll have better tools to sort, search, and view your personal collection of observations.
  • Improved Explore interface. Aligning more with the explore experience of the existing Android app, we are releasing a new universal search experience in the iNaturalist app that allows you to search users, taxa, and projects all in one place, and browse observations and species more intuitively (including access to recent searches and sorting). We expect to release this in August.
  • Adding observations to Traditional Projects. Under way, expected in September, this will enable all app users to submit observations to traditional projects from the new observation screen, with improved feedback states for observation fields and project requirements before submitting to the project.
  • Better establishment means indicators. We'll add prominent establishment means and conservation status indicators in several places in the app so you can easily see when you've observed a native or endemic species vs. an introduced one.

On the iNaturalist website:

  • A new, responsive homepage for logged-out visitors. We designed, built, and released our new home page in advance of the City Nature Challenge in April.
  • Project improvements. We completed and launched these in April as well — including hidden leaderboards, single-day bioblitz times, and new Umbrella project sorting options.
  • Timed user suspensions for improved moderation. Released in late June, allowing our moderators and curators to help maintain iNat as a friendly place to be online.
  • Behind the scenes, we achieved better than 99.5% uptime and made significant progress reducing bot and scraper traffic to iNaturalist.org and Network Sites, using a service called Cloudflare to cut costs and protect the platform.

Science

Our work under the Science pillar is about strengthening iNaturalist as a tool for biodiversity science.

  • Searching, sorting, and highlighting top ID Tips. We released a new system for surfacing the most useful identification comments on species pages, with the goal of better surfacing the iNat community's collective knowledge. This was beta tested with a small group in early 2026 and launched across the website in mid-June. This is a web-only feature to start.
  • Reduce how often people select incorrect species-level computer vision suggestions. This critical feature is underway. We want to be thoughtful about what we change, and it's taking longer than we hoped to produce something we can ship. We remain focused on delivering improvements here in the coming months.
  • Helping observers take more identifiable photos. We're refining our photo tips approach. Rather than complex automated suggestions, we will provide general best practices for taking identifiable photos — such as ensuring sharp focus — and better highlight community-identified diagnostic traits for specific organisms.

Looking forward

People

In the second half of the year, we're focused on making the iNat app experience better for everyone and consistent across platforms, improving the overall experience for our most devoted iNat users as well as people new to the platform.

  • Assuming our closed beta goes well, we'll make the iNaturalist app available on Android in open beta on the Play Store. If you have an Android device, you'll be able to opt in and give us real-world feedback ahead of a full launch in 2027. (We're targeting Android 7.0+, which translates to 99%+ of Android users.)
  • You'll be able to import sound files from your device into an observation in the app.
  • We'll design and start building a new home screen in the app where we can more easily surface the richness of iNat — observations, projects, blog posts, and real-world impacts of our mission, with a more personalized experience for all users, from those who just joined iNat to our daily power users.
  • We'll implement background uploading in the app, which will make it a lot easier to bulk upload observations when you get back from a long day in the field.
  • You'll be able to crop and rotate photos in the app, another oft-requested feature.
  • We're designing new ways to celebrate your personal iNat achievements and journey. We're exploring ways to highlight when you've seen a lifer species, helping you find organisms seen in a specific area you haven't observed yet, and looking back on observations you've made on a specific day.
  • We'll improve new user signup and in-app guidance to help people new to iNaturalist make higher quality observations and aim to reduce burden on identifiers to correct errors.

On the website:

  • We'll continue rolling out mobile-responsive versions of key pages — including taxon and observation detail pages, user profiles, the dashboard, the People directory, and blog and journal posts — building on the responsive homepage we shipped in the first half of the year.
  • We'll improve the iNaturalist.org blog with searchability, topic tagging, and category organization — making it easier for everyone to find what they're looking for.
  • We'll also conduct substantive research and some backend development to lay a foundation for an improved notifications system in 2027. This is a big topic, with lots of complexity to it, so we'll develop plans to roll out some iterative improvements next year.

Science

Our Science work for the rest of the year is organized around three things: continuing to surface the expertise already in our community, making our computer vision smarter and more consistent, and beginning to explore what's next for search on iNaturalist.

  • Surfacing community expertise. iNaturalist holds an extraordinary wealth of identification knowledge in comments left by expert observers over the years. We launched Identification Tips on the iNaturalist website in June to begin surfacing that knowledge. We'll iterate on that system based on community feedback and continue to refine the feature.
  • Improving computer vision (CV) accuracy and consistency. Two of the most consistent requests from our identifier community are to improve the accuracy of CV suggestions — especially for difficult taxa — and for suggestion behavior to be consistent across the website and the app. We're addressing both in the second half of the year.
    • We're completing work on CV improvements that will give higher-confidence suggestions at taxonomic levels above species — a family or genus rather than a potentially incorrect species — for observations where species-level confidence is low.
    • We'll also align the methods and parameters used across web and mobile, so that identifiers and observers get consistent suggestions no matter how they access iNat.
  • Exploring the future of search. iNaturalist has amassed one of the largest collections of wildlife photographs in the world. Building on the Vision Language Demo we did in 2024, we're continuing to explore ways to make it easier to search by visual cues using text. We'll expand vision-language search capability, beginning at the taxon page level and working toward a stand-alone interface that operates on the full iNaturalist image dataset.
