Neighboring Manzanita with utterly different phenologies.

I think these two plants are Arctostaphylos manzanita despite being found at 14 m above sea level... I always wonder at descriptions in Jepson that are so specific. I guess it means no herbaria have collections from below 30m.

What caused me to stop and observe these two manzanitas was their very different phenologies. The one on the right was absolutely loaded with berries and nascent inflorescences. And the one on the left had none of either when viewed from the trail... at least until I looked very closely. There were a few berries in the top of the bush about two meters up (see photos).

The shredding bark was different between the two plants as well. On the left the curling bark was at the very base, and for the right plant the shredding bark was concentrated further up on the branches.

I thought the Jepson description was interesting as well. There are a lot of "or" statements for what I would consider major characters, such as burled or not, glabrous or scabrous leaves.

Habit: Erect, 2--8 m; burled or not. Leaf: erect; petiole 6--12 mm; blade 2.5--5 cm, 1--3.5 cm wide, wide- or oblong-ovate to obovate, bright green, shiny, or glaucous, dull, glabrous or scabrous, veins nonglandular-hairy, base rounded to +- wedge-shaped, tip acute, margin entire, flat. Inflorescence: panicle, 2--7-branched; nascent inflorescence pendent, axis 1.5--4.5 cm; bracts appressed, 2--4 mm, scale-like, deltate to sharp-pointed; pedicel 3--8 mm, glabrous. Fruit: 8--12 mm wide, depressed-spheric. Chromosomes: 2n=52.

And for the manzanita subspecies: Habit: Burl 0. Stem: twig glabrous to sparsely short-nonglandular-hairy. Leaf: dull to bright green. Inflorescence: 4--7-branched; axis +- 1 mm wide. Flower: ovary (and fruit) glabrous. Fruit: stones variably fused or free.
Ecology: Woodland, chaparral, conifer forest; Elevation: 30--1200 m.

(1) I have installed two moisture sensors in the soil by the Coast Silktassel in this observation. One sensor is at 8" below the soil surface and the other is at 24" below. The measurements are in centibars... the closer to zero, the wetter the soil.

AI Confusion: manzanitas that look alike are different, and manzanitas that look different are the same

Two manzanitas on Fort Ord that appeared to be quite different were growing side by side, branches intertwined. The iNat AI named the one on the right that was past its bloom and beginning to fruit, Arctostaphylos crustacea. And it named the one on its left that was in full bloom, A. tomentosa.
It was a bit hard to photograph the two that day because the clouds were moving quickly and one moment the scene was in deep shade and the next brilliant sunlight, but the manzanita on the right that was past its bloom also appeared to be far greener than the one on the left. Looking at the twigs, both were short haired, but the one on the left was far hairier. Neither appeared to have glandular hairs in my opinion. Looking next at the leaves, the upper surfaces on both plants were shiny and smooth. The undersides were both hairy, but the one on the right was less dense with longer bristly hairs that were bent, tangled, and almost appeared to be branched or frayed. The undersurface of the leaves on the left were much more densely covered with hairs but they appeared shorter, not bristly, and more uniform with less fraying. Both had reddish-grey persistent shredding bark, and appeared to have burls though I would have needed a long handled rake to be sure.

Both plants key to Arctostaphylos tomentosa tomentosa per The Jepson Manual online despite looking quite different to me, both from a distance in color and bloom, and up close in the type and quality of hairyness (Indumentum for those who don't understand English).

  • Burls at base of main stem, also above or not; plant sprouting after fire
  • Leaves with stomata generally only abaxially, surfaces generally differing in color and/or hairiness
  • Old stem bark persistent, gray, shredding
  • Twig without glands
  • Twig short-tomentose or short-nonglandular-hairy
  • Leaves tomentose abaxially

Lady Bird Beetles and *Lupinus arboreus* (California Coastal Bush Lupine)

The California Coastal Bush Lupine Lupinus arboreus is subject to some major aphid infestations ( https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/80203682 ) primarily of Macrosiphum albifrons (the Lupine Aphid) and the local Lady Bird Beetles seem to "know" this. If I want to see a variety of Lady Bird Beetles this time of year I just head over to a patch of Coastal Bush Lupines and begin looking for orange. I didn't find any aphids this time, but the Lady Bird Beetles were there anyway, searching.

"Garrya elliptica" Flowering Phenology at Fort Ord

Introduction

Successful seed production in dioecious plants requires that potential mates shed pollen and have receptive stigmata at the same time. Because exposing delicate reproductive organs such as stigmata and anthers to desiccation can be stressful in times of drought, deferring anthesis until conditions are better could be adaptive (1-3). Garrya elliptica (Coast Silk Tassel) is a dioecious wind-pollinated shrub to small tree locally common in Maritime Chaparral and Oak Woodland along the coast of California and Oregon (X). No pollinator is needed in the case of G. elliptica, so flowering is not constrained to times when a pollinator is present. Flowering could hypothetically vary according to soil moisture in an individual plant's root zone.

Most Fort Ord soils are Loamy Sands with a plant available water capacity of about one inch per foot of soil profile. Since most plants get most of their water from the upper 18" of soil and some evaporation and runnoff could be expected, I chose two inches of precipitation as the threshold for soil moist enough to trigger normal growth activity in shrubs and trees in the Fort Ord area. In practice, this threshold seems to work (me checking with a shovel and observing new growth in chamise, coffeeberry, manzanita, oak, black sage, and silk tassel). However, this hypothesis will also be tested using buried moisture sensors.

Hypothesis: Flowering in Garrya elliptica is sensitive to soil moisture.

Test: If flowering in Garrya elliptica is sensitive to soil moisture then flowering should begin later in years where significant rains come later.

Q1: When did the soil profile become moist in the Fall each study year?

Based on personal experience, the soil profile at Fort Ord is not moist in the Fall until 2" of rain has accumulated. However, this will be tested over a three year period (Fall 2024 until Spring 2028) in soil of typical Garrya elliptica habitat on the former Fort Ord. Until then, an estimate can be made using rainfall data from the Monterey Airport.

During the Water Year 2022-2023 Fort Ord had accumulated 2 inches of rain by November 9, 2022
During the Water Year 2023-2024 Fort Ord had accumulated 2 inches of rain by December 20, 2023

In the Fall of 2022 Fort Ord soil profile was wet 41 days earlier than in the Fall of 2023.

Q2: How long after the soil profile is wet will Garrya elliptica anthesis begin in the study area each year?

Addressing Q1 Directly Using Buried Moisture Sensors

On October 11, 2024 two Irrometer WATERMARK 200SS sensors (A) were installed at 8" and 24" soil depths approximately two meters from a pair of male Garrya elliptica in a stand of Maritime Chaparral dominated by Adenostoma fasciculatum and two species of Arctostaphylos (A. pumila and A. tomentosa) on the former Fort Ord (see associated observations below). The preparation and installation of the sensors was as recommended by Irrometer () except that the sensors were positioned horizontally, in order to more correctly measure moisture at the two precise depths, instead of vertically as illustrated in the specifications sheet.
