Commonly Observed Moth Eggs

See also: Beetle EggsHemiptera EggsButterfly EggsThings Mistaken for Eggs

The eggs of many moth species look alike, and it's difficult to ID eggs just based on morphological similarity. Eggs may also change shape & color as the embryo develops inside, so a freshly laid egg will usually look different from one that's several hours or days old. It's crucial to know the plant on which the egg was laid, so you'll always want to record the plant species or even better make an observation for it. Other factors to note are the part of the plant on which you found the egg(s) and whether they were laid singly or in clusters. The moths recorded in the area and the time of year the eggs were observed may also be helpful in narrowing down an ID.

This is "growing" to be a very nice resource! @treegrow Being able to click on the species name to see all iNat observation for that species that are annotated as eggs is especially convenient. Thanks! Gradually I think people will begin to realize that annotating is almost as important as identifying.
Sometimes there are strange exceptions to the host plant rule. I would not have believed these were Phryganidia californica (California Oak Moth) eggs, unless the adult moth also was there https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/138067497
And this observation illustrates the extent of the problem caused by these defoliation events (that is caused by the moth itself) https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/138079672

Thanks for making this incredible compilation. I have a good bit of Lepidoptera egg photos, but I never indicate when uploading what stage the subject is (egg, larva, pupa) because I haven't been able to figure out how to do it all at once when uploading instead of having to go back in and edit. If there are any specific southeastern species you need, let me know and I'll see if I have them. Thanks again for doing this!

Posted by ashleybosarge 9 months ago

@hkibak thanks! I have updated the description for Phryganidia californica to say "on trees, particularly Quercus (Oaks)". The NHM Hosts database has a few more non-oak hosts listed for this species.

Posted by treegrow 9 months ago

@ashleybosarge Thanks for the heads up. I'll check your observations to see if you have species that are not yet covered. If adding annotations doesn't fit into your workflow, maybe you could add eggs in the description or in a tag? I sometimes do a tag/description string search when there are no observations with egg Life Stage annotations for a common species.

Very nice, thank you! Bookmarked for future reference.

Fantatstic!

A great resource. Thank you!

Brilliant page! Well needed, I still need to upload several eggs of species I've photographed, this will make me make a point of doing it

FYI I updated my Western sheep moth egg observation with the Associated Plant field (Common Snowberry Symphoricarpos albus)
Until this posting, I didn’t really understand that moth egg observations were actually identifiable and useful. In the future I will be adding “egg shots” to my insect photography. :)

Excelente publicación! Y gracias por haberme etiquetado. Si sirve el dato, el huevo de Manduca diffissa estaba en una hoja de Cestrum parqui.

Wow what a lot of work you've done! I know how long these things take to set up and make lovely. Very impressed!

Little notelet: Bombycomorpha bifascia (and in fact all three bomby spp.) eat only Searsia spp. (Anacardiaceae). Here's another set of photos of their eggs - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/29440513

Posted by karoopixie 9 months ago

Thanks, I have updated the Bombycomorpha bifascia image. Note however that several Rhus species have been recorded as host plants for this species in the literature. See Joannou & Gurkovich, 2009.

Posted by treegrow 9 months ago

Yes, all our Rhus are now Searsia, so they refer to the same genus. And B. pallida has been recorded on Schinus spp. (pepper trees), also Anacardiaceae, though B. bifascia is always on Searsia (Rhus).

Our African Caterpillar Rearing Group (CRG) publishes their rearing data (life cycle, host-plants & parasitoids) every couple of years and all the papers are available as free pdf downloads. I have put all the links on the Pillar Parade project - https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/pillar-parade-s-afr

Posted by karoopixie 9 months ago

Ah, that explains it. I have updated the information about B. bifascia.

Posted by treegrow 9 months ago

@treegrow and @karoopixie lately I've run into this problem more frequently, it's definitely a challenge! I always have to keep possible taxonomic rearrangements in the back of my mind when making these entomological ID's based on plant hosts, especially with galls.

Thanks, @treegrow, for putting together this great guide!

@treegrow - this is a beautiful , detailed and well put together post. Thanks for including my observation as well am happy that it has some use in this so diverse world of life.

Posted by ram_k 9 months ago

@hkibak @karoopixie Feel free to suggest corrections. I know nothing about African leps or plants.

Posted by treegrow 9 months ago

@annikaml @ram_k Thanks for your eggy contributions!

Posted by treegrow 9 months ago

oh wow this is incredible, thank you for putting this together!

Posted by franzanth 8 months ago

Very nice ! What a comprehensive resource.

Posted by steve_kerr 8 months ago

Thanks, "comprehensive" is a bit of an overstatement. So far, it covers only about 400 of 200,000 moth species. But it's a start.

Hi, I am not sure about Lasiocampidae is it moth or not
Here is observation with eggs of Macrothylacia rubi
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/145063201

And many thanks for this very useful post!

Posted by katya 8 months ago

Yes, Lasiocampidae are moths. See here.
