Commonly Observed Butterfly Eggs

See also: Beetle EggsHemiptera EggsMoth EggsThings Mistaken for Eggs

The eggs of many butterfly species look alike, and it's difficult to ID eggs just based on morphological similarity. Eggs may also change shape & color as the embryo develops inside, so a freshly laid egg will usually look different from one that's several hours or days old. It's crucial to know the plant on which the egg was laid, so you'll always want to record the plant species or even better make an observation for it. Other factors to note are the part of the plant on which you found the egg(s) and whether they were laid singly or in clusters. The butterflies recorded in the area and the time of year the eggs were observed may also be helpful in narrowing down an ID.

Since the comprehensive Lepidoptera egg list started to get too long, I have moved the moths to a separate post: Commonly Observed Moth Eggs

Thanks, I have swapped the image for one that was found on guava, which appears to be the common host.

This is fantastic, Katja! Thanks for putting this together!

Thanks for making your images available. Putting this guide together was possible only because there are so many great egg images on iNat.

What a wonderful project! Makes me want to take and post more egg photos. Thank you!

Very true. Eggs are stunningly gorgeous. Thanks to all the great iNat egg photographers who release their images under a CC license, so they can be used in projects like this!

@gillessanmartin Thanks! I have added a bunch more images from your Flickr album. You have quite a few species there that are still missing from iNat.

Not only is this project a brilliant idea and useful to all, it is also such a visually pleasing collection of images! Thank you for making the effort, I'll look through and add 'observation fields', etc where I can. @treegrow

Thanks @karthik_83. There are definitely a lot of unmarked egg observations, and it's difficult to find them. So adding more Life Stage annotations for egg observation will help to make this collection more comprehensive.
