However the next day I found ones ~5-8 m away that didn't seem associated with those roots

On the underside of a cut Quercus log in an abandoned car port in downtown Oakland. Log has a few inches of soil/duff between the log and the concrete.

spores = 8-8.5 um in diamter, spherical, rough, thick walled
asci = 220-240 x 13-15 um, 8 spores that seem unusually crowded into the top of long asci.
melzers = brown reaction on immature asci

Found this mass of mycelium right under/around a mature black truffle. I know we can’t say for certain that they’re associated but it was an interesting find. The mycelium smelled like new leather shoes, the truffle fruity.
