I'm a hobby / recreational photographer interested in all things nature: flora, fauna, education, science. My interests include exploring local nature preserves and parks. I can thank my macro lens for prompting me to move from casual observations like "oh, that's pretty," to "is it native?, what's the family and genus?, what's the conservation status?." Macro photography extends what was once a 1 hour fast-paced fitness stroll, into a 4-5 hour close inspection of the infinite small things along the path. I discovered there's a universe of life within a square meter of turf. That is, if one takes the time to observe.

That said, I can say it's exciting to discover something new, and, on occasions something rare or endangered. For me, those discoveries are rare, priceless treasures. It emphasizes the ongoing need to protect those habitats which, unfortunately, are disappearing rapidly around growing urban centers.

Often, I run into roadblocks with identification. Though I've got all the regional printed and online guides, there's usually something puzzling. The puzzles are much fun! As well, I've reached out to scientists working for the various regional agencies managing the lands I explore.
