The world's biggest global biodiversity documenting event starts this week! This year there are 450 cities participating across 45 countries, making it the biggest CNC yet!
Here in the Bay Area, we've been lucky to get some recent late-season rains which should make this year's CNC particularly good. We hope you have a chance to get outside and help document the incredible nature we have in our region.
Taking part in the CNC is easy! Just use iNaturalist to make and share observations of wild plants and animals (and fungi and algae and bacteria...) in any of the nine Bay Area counties between April 29 and May 2, 2022. Your observations will automatically be added to our SF Bay Area CNC project. During the May 3-8 time frame, help us identify the observations that were made. Results will be announced on Monday, May 9.
You can go out and make observations on your own, with your friends and family, or participate in one of the 20+ events that are being held in the Bay Area. If you go to an event, you might have a chance to pick up this year's SF Bay Area CNC sticker too!

@kestrel - what are the chances of getting Santa Cruz and Monterey County (and maybe San Benito, lol) added to the SF Bay Area project? We moved at the end of last year and are now in Monterey and there is no project specifically for us. We (myself, @ramblinghobbit, and others) would love to be counted in the SF Bay Area region though :) Otherwise our observations will just go to the Global Project.
Would love to be part of this but I just moved out of state 2 weeks ago.
@sarah-mae @greengras2000 Awwww, so many great SF Bay Area observers moving away!
@sarah-mae I can't add new counties to the SF CNC this year, but we should chat about what could happen for next year – I've always thought there should be a "Monterey Bay Area" CNC project!
Alas in unfortunate timing I'll be out of town for work next weekend.
I am primed and ready, getting extra rest after practicing hard the past two weekends. We Will Be Victorious and Document All!
@kestrel No worries and I agree! I had a great convo about possibilities for next year with @smallnslimy :)
Thanks @kestrel! I've set up a couple unofficial small events and hope to do may part to connect more people and hopefully add a unique observation or two! And thank you once again for being on my podcast - it was a fun interview!
Would it be possible to get some stickers for our Microblitz event on 5/1?
Looking forward to it. Always happy to have another excuse to do even more iNatting.
I'm looking forward to it! I love going out with my eyes and my camera to find whatever creatures I can!
In South Texas doing my iNat thing. Possibly another time. Love to see the results
No reminder needed: it's a calendar highlight every year now! We are heading to some new trails and areas to see what diverse surprises they may hold. Thanks so much for supporting such a fun and educational activity!
@kestrel My phone is all warmed up and ready for tomorrow (and the next 3 days)!
