Entering the life stage in observations

iNaturalist has an Insect Life Stage field that can be added to insect observations to identify the life stage. This project will utilize this field to present data views split by life stage.

Use the Insect life stage field to enter the stage of each of your observations: adult, caterpillar [larva], chrysalis/cocoon [pupa], or egg. Then the observations will appear on the following taxon lists, which are split by life stage.

On single-observation pages, the Insect Life Stage field appears below the photos. For example:

If the field has not been added, use the Add/edit more fields link to add it.

One can also add the Insect Life Stage using the Batch Edit feature at the top of one's own Observations page.

Auto-aggregator is now turned on

I turned on the auto-aggregator feature of this iNat project to automatically include suitable observations. Then members of the project do not need to manually add new observations as they are submitted.

(If this feature bugs you, you can opt out. Go to your Profile, click on Edit account settings & profile, and change your Project Settings to your liking.)

This feature will add observations of any life stage, so the project now welcomes caterpillars, pupae, and eggs. There is a still a separate caterpillar project

to highlight the caterpillar diversity across the state.

Project now includes Maryland butterflies

The Maryland Outdoor Moth Survey has expanded to include adult butterflies and skippers. Adult moth observations continue to be sought as well.

The project name has accordingly changed to the Maryland Outdoor Butterfly/Moth Survey.

A companion project is also available for Maryland caterpillar observations:
Maryland Outdoor Caterpillar Survey
